General Smith was a former Deputy Chief of Staff of the United States Army and twice served as Commandant of the U. S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. He served on active duty for 38 years, and has been widely credited for his role in developing the modern volunteer Army and for educating its senior officers at Carlisle. This collection of uniforms belonged to the Smith family. The WWI uniform belonged to General
